Chapter 12
Steve was perched on the side of her boat, tossing pebbles into the water. âHey, Steve,â she said as she stepped on board.
He turned around. âSorry, Charlotte. I know you were with Mr. Smith.â He threw another pebble into the water, harder. âWhy didnât you tell me to get lost?â
Her face was slightly tender, and she suspected that it was red from whisker burn. Pressing her cool hands against her cheeks, she thought of the smile on Dylanâs face when heâd left her. âItâs okay, Steve. I told you to call anytime.â Unlocking the cabin, she went in and sat on the couch. âWhatâs up?â
He followed her in and flopped down beside her. Out of the sun, she could see that his eyes were red. âMy father threw me out of the house.â His hand shook as he pushed his hair out of his face. âHe told me not to come back.â
âOh, Steve, Iâm sorry.â She reached over and grasped his hand. âIs there anything I can do to help?â
Steveâs gaze hardened. âNo. Thereâs nothing you can do. Stay away from him, Charlotte. Donât even think about trying to talk to him. I donât want you to get hurt.â
âHe wouldnât hurt me.â Steveâs father was too much of a coward to go after anyone who would fight back. âBut what about you? Do you have a place to stay?â
He shrugged. âI can stay with one of my buddies.â He looked away, but not before sheâd seen his uncertainty.
âYou can stay here, if youâd like,â she told him. âUntil you get things straightened out.â
âYeah?â
âOf course.â She couldnât bear to think of Steve wandering from one friendâs house to another, feeling more lost and alone every day. âIâm sure it wonât be long.â
âHeâs not going to let me back in the house,â Steve said bitterly.
Charlotte curled her legs beneath her and watched Steve. âWhy donât you tell me what happened?â
Steve jumped to his feet and prowled the small space. âThe sheriff called,â he finally said. âMy mother answered the phone. He wanted to make sure everything was okay -- that I was okay.â Steve shoved at a plastic chair across from the couch and it tumbled over. âHe told her he wouldnât have arrested me if heâd been on duty. He would have brought me home, instead. God forbid the public works commissioner should be embarrassed by something his son did.â
âSheriff Godfrey was just following up, making sure you were all right,â Charlotte said. âThatâs all.â
âCome on, Charlotte.â Steve turned to stare at her, and he looked far older than twenty-two. âYou know the sheriff looks the other way when my fatherâs involved. Heâs powerful around here. He controls a lot of jobs. Godfrey wanted to make sure Dad wasnât angry.â
Charlotte wished Steve was wrong, but she knew he was right. The sheriff had been making excuses for Lyle Jacobs for years. âWhat happened after the sheriff called?â
âMy father heard the end of the conversation. My mother wouldnât tell him who it was, said it was just a phone solicitor.
